How The New Apple iOS 14 Update May Affect Your Ads On Facebook?

Luke Morais • January 29, 2021

Social media giant Facebook has recently announced via its blog site that Apple will now be introducing a new feature which will apparently start warning its Facebook and Instagram users in the form of a pop-up message. The warning will be in the form of prompt asking users if they want to opt-out data tracking, as seen in the screenshot below.

Although this is seen to be a brave step taken by Apple itself, digital marketing and advertising industries, however, seem to be greatly impacted by this decision. Now, the obvious question arises: How does it eventually impact us as a digital marketing agency? Seeing how this implementation will first affect Facebook, this means your main promotional activities on the social media platform will see a downright tumultuous fall.

Where optimization, targeting and reporting campaigns are concerned, you will directly be affected if you fall under these categories;

1. You are tracking certain conversion actions with Pixel, such as Add To Cart, Purchases and Submit Contact Form.

2. You are optimizing your campaigns with the data collected by Pixel

3. You are customizing, creating and retargeting audiences, although it's worth noting that your data will no longer be as accurate considering how some iOS 14 users may reject data tracking.

4. You are tracking app-related conversions, especially if you are tracking app installs by iOS 14 users.

Nonetheless, do keep in mind that Facebook is not the only social media platform that will be affected by this change starting as early as this year. In time to come, we foresee that this feature will soon be introduced within other social media platforms as well. For now, only time will tell.

Considering Facebook has been the only social platform being affected by this change, the company has graciously provided users who might be affected by this change with some useful methods on how they could verify a website’s domain and update it accordingly to Facebook’s SDK for iOS14 version 8.1. Alternatively, you may also refer to the guide here for more information regarding these methods.

In conclusion to this sudden change, sources have confirmed that Facebook has not taken this decision lightly. The social media company was said to have had a furious backlash with Apple, commenting that their inconsiderate decision here would negatively affect SME businesses who have been constantly relying on Facebook as their top source of platform to display ads.
